Effective sustainability criteria for bioenergy: Towards the implementation of the european renewable directive II

Sustainability criteria and verification through national legislations voluntary certification schemes are important tools to ensure sustainable supply bioenergy development in the European Union. The Renewable Energy Directive Recast (RED II) sets framework for renewable energy support period 2021–2030 with updated new sustainability criteria. This study reviews RED II existing schemes. aim is identify possible gaps good practices propose a set of that effective their coverage most urgent concerns, practically applicable whole sector. proposed was validated stakeholder interviews. results show major step forward safeguarding supply; however, it still entails risks forest management lacks clarifications imported biomass feedstocks. this more extensive than help assure land use, protect biodiversity, conserve ecosystems, whilst also addressing rights workers local communities, efficient use resources. These already implemented some comprehensive stringent It recommended policy makers, scheme owners practitioners coordinate discussions agreements on various aspects. A clear definition waste residues, measurement indirect change, recognition competent demonstrate compliance should be considered at EU level.
